Jon Lauterer
The last thing we need is one more thing on our pandemic, politically stressed out plates; but not for musician Jon Lauterer. He decided the best time to start a podcast is NOW! “Basically, the reason to start was to fill my creative urge, which was not being utilized staying at home,” Jon said, “Much of my time in lockdown was looking after my 2-year-old and then she would go to bed and I had time on my hands.”
Jon began his foray into the musical arts when he got his very first drum set for Christmas in Crossnore, NC as a youngin. Today, the drum set is less Mickey Mouse and more Mickey Hart, but the passion for music has never faded to silence. From band teacher to band member, Jon has seen all sides of the industry but when Covid precautions shut the door on venues across the country, the Western NC native saw an open window to the Asheville music scene.
Then on Apr. 20th the premiere episode dropped and The Asheville Sound podcast was born. The first episode featured an interview with Jon’s former bandmates of Plankeye Peggy. “Mainly the interview was an excuse to reconnect and get my sea legs for the format of the show. I don’t think of it as an interview, instead I approach it as a conversation of music and life.”
40 episodes later, and The Asheville Sound can be heard ‘round the world. The podcast serves as “an in-depth look into the musicians, bands and people” with a specific focus on the Western NC community. Jon was “very purposefully trying to get the AVL community around this just to learn about the scene if you’re interested in it; and If you’re a fan of a musician to be able to get insight into their personalities aside from musical creations.”
As musicians are “not making plans ‘til we see some semblance of normalcy,” the podcast allows musicians to “get more in touch with their audience and let them learn more about the creative process.” After all when it comes to life right now “we’re all in the same storm but in different boats,” but until the tide changes, The AVL Sound will stay a buoy for artists in the sea of soundwaves.
